Brussels Attacks; Explosion At Maelbeek Metro Station

An explosion has been reported at a metro station in the Belgian capital, Brussels, as the country raises its terror threat to the highest level.

Another explosion, following the two reported at the city’s Zaventem airport, has now been reported at a metro station close to the EU institutions.

The Brussels metro has tweeted to say the entire system is shut down following reports of a blast at Maelbeek station, close to the city’s EU institutions.

The blasts come four days after the capture in Brussels of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the jihadist attacks in Paris on 13 November 2015.

Belgium has now raised its terror threat to its highest level. That takes the level for the entire country up from level three to four, the maximum.

The country was already on high alert after a shootout in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek last week in which Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam was captured.
