An axe-wielding assailant who attacked police officers in New York late Thursday night, is suspected of having Islamist links.
Two police officers were attacked late Thursday night by a man wielding a two-handed axe. The man, 32-year-old Zale Thompson, is being probed for potential Islamist links by investigators.
One of the police officers was struck in the head, while the other suffered a wound to his arm. The police officers discharged several rounds in response, killing the attacker and wounding a female bystander.
The police officer struck in the head has been listed as critical but stable. The female bystander is recovering after treatment for a gunshot to the back.
